Anyone go to a mainstream school but has a resource room for the blind? Who loves to hang out there? Talk about it.

I was mainstreamed my entire life. Yes, a room was set aside for myself and the teacher helping me. I didn't mind it much, unless i was getting told off for something. lol

I was mainstreamed all through school, but I didn't have a resource room until junior high. That room was awful, because it was the size of a storage closet. But the one I had in high school was great. It was one of three rooms in the building that had air conditioning, and it turned into the place where my friends and I would hang out during study halls. As long as our teachers were convinced my friends were helping me with things (maps for geography, diagrams for Physics ... we were always able to come up with something), they didn't care.

I was always in a regular school the whole way, but I go there ones in awhile to do work. There rooms was cool. I would usually write my paper, proof read it, print it out, and the minute I get done with my paper, I go online. I did not have an internet connection before, so I use their computer to check my e mail, go on Facebook and of course watch some movies on Youtube. I have a lot of spare time before. It was fun to hang out there.

I also had a room set aside for me, my teacher, and of korce my books! In elementary school it was shaird with other teachers that had to store stuff there. And In middle school I had a room all to my self. And now that I am in high school I am once again sharing with the other teachers that need extra storage space.

I'm in a mainstream school, and I love having a resource room. It's really nice to hang out there because the atmosphere is one in which I can actually concentrate. I like it better than the average class room because it's not as loud. I get a lot more work done there, and the teacher who assists with putting my work in accessible formats is pretty cool. She's very nonchalant and affable. We get along very well.
And my teachers are always willing to let me work in my resource room, which is pretty amazing.

ah. The vision room! I loved them when I was in Junior High and High School! The TVIs were very cool and most of the students were also nice to hang out with. I liked it because I could concentrate much better than in the other classrooms.

We didn't have a resource room specially for the blind, but in elementary, I used to go to a resource room, that i think worked with slower or learning-disabled students, and that was alright. I would get some work done there, or a lady would come in to work with me on learning other stuff having to do with language and reading, or I would just find something else to do like play with clay or buble wrap or whatever. Also, this older student would sometimes work with me in there, and I guess he was like a mentor or something; we would usually play Yatsi, talk, or we'd read or listen to a story. In middle school, we had a resource room, but again it was a general one and for that, I was never assigned to go, so I never went to it. And in high school, we did have a room set aside for blindness things like a Braille-printer, books, and stuff like that, but it was actually a little teachers' workroom, so it had a phone, a restroom, and lots of print books on the shelves as well. Me and/or my friend (also blind) would spend time there, either just hanging out and/or to get work done, and the VR teacher would also work with us in there. I liked that little room because it was quiet, and we sometimes saw some of our teachers there because they'd stop by to get something and stuff like that.

Yeah, when I was in public school I loved the resource room too. To be honest, I would go there when I wanted to skip classes, assuming my vision teacher wasn't there at the time. But considering I had a hellish experience at that school, you couldn't really blame me. It was just a peaceful little room where I would go to hang out, read, or go on the internet, and even though it was in the back of the library, no one stopped me. I could walk in there any time I wanted, but I could get away with it cause I was blind. Probably not a good thing, but there you have it.

I had a vision room for elementary and middle school, but not in high school. I am not full V.I. anymore, so... because I chose to go to a school that wasn't the one that had the room. In my elementary school the room was a bungalo, and I went in there to do work mostly. My teachers were a bit strict. In middle school though, it was a whole different story. I had a pretty cool vision teacher, I have disagreements now in how he handle things, but for the most part he was just pretty damn cool. he was never lazy, anyone around my district can tell you that, but when you are done with work and you don't have to go back to class it was Partae!!! I mean, it was so relaxing, and half the time he was joking with you. So, going there to do work was a plus, and sometimes I admit to making one too many excuses to go there and work.

We did have a resource room set asside for visually impaired students at my primary school which was OK because there were books in there and a radio. They eventually put a braille embosser in there, but that was a few months before I left the school. The resource room in my secondary school was cool. It was also used by one of the teachers with a couple of students who were a bit slower than everyone, but he was funny and interesting to talk to. The resource room in my secondary school also had an embosser and computer with a very old version of Hal. Unfortunately I couldn't really make the excuse of forgetting my folder for maths or something because they were pretty much always kept there unless I needed to take them home for work! Hahaha!

Hi, oh yes, resource rooms, I remember those. In elementary school through high school I went there for math. I also went there to get help with my research papers. then there was a time there was some exercise equipment and after lunch my friends and I went to exercise now that was fun.

Yes, in middle school and high school, we did have a vision room for the blind. They were actually offices with phones and Internet and a Braille embosser, since the Braille transcriptionist would work in there. I mainly did work in them but would hang out in them occasionally.

I've been main-streamed so far (and I think it'll stay that way...), and I freaking loved the vission room!
MY TVI is one of the teachers who is extremely nice, so if I don't have to do anything, she just let's me chill there, and all that stuff.
I mostly liked it, because when I was in there by myself, I'd sneak a snack out of there fridge or something Hahaha!

I was always mainstreamed...and back in high school they had something called the resource room. That was where my scanner, printer, and computer were located. So, that was home base.

highschool, yes i had one, it was the size of a storage closet, but i didn't care, there wasn''t really room, so, most of the time i curled up on the floor to do my work, so my teacher brought in a carpet, so there i was dioing work, on a carpet, on the floor, but i didn't care, normally, my friends, the three that i had would hang out in there... it was good, otherwise we'd hang out in the school psychologists office. she was cool, helped me a lot, and just yean

Currently in middle school and mainstreamed, and it'l probably stay that way. I had a resource room in elimentary school, and it contained the computer and scanner and was a bit bigger then a storage closet and could fit the scanner and embosser. Now that I'm in my seccond year of middle school, my tvi has a room where she scans and brailles papers for me. I just sit in another room and do work. It's quiet so I can concentrate. Sometimes the slightly slower and ADD kids who need help come there, but I'm usualy not there, and they distract me, so if I have to do work, I then go to the library which contains all the books you could imagine. I want to take all of them and read them them, but they're in print and I can only read braille. The resource room wasn't fun for me, just a workspace. I have more friends outside of school then inside, so If I'm done with work early, I usually read or whatnot.

P.s. sorry for such a long post.

Hi,

I was the same as Brook, I had a resource room in high school and me and my friends used to hang out there because we all got on really well with my SNA (Special Needs Assistant, that's what we say here anyway). It was also handy because if any of my friends couldn't find another one of us, we would usually be in 'the room' as we called it! :-)

I was mainstreamed and put in a vision room part of the day in elementary school. But then in middle school and on through high school I was put in a regular class full time and a vision teacher would come to the school and see me a couple days a week. And the assistant that worked in the vision room with the vision teacher in my elementary school actually quit her job there when I left the school and transfered with me all through middle and high school to work with me and put my materials in accessible format. My senior year of high school I went to the school for the blind, but by then I already had most of my core classes done so I mainly went to see if it was all that it was cracked up to be, and I had easy classes all year.

Resource room? My room is the bedroom at the back of the hallway whith a shut door and loud stereo blasting. And yes it's at home I've never had one of those upon being in public school so haha. But still, though there wher places for my books and so on and that's about as generic as you get. Though, if your crafty about it bringing along a laptop to class to type instead of braille note takers is a pretty feasable soullution.

The vision room brings back memories. I used to love hanging out there in high school. Also it was a lot quieter so I liked going in there to take my tests.
